Flock to It!: Bookworms on a budget

One of the best perks, so far, of having my own blog has been learning from the people who read it.

Of course that was something I expected and hoped for when I started my journey in to social media, but unlike services like Twitter, which is so obviously a conversation between people, blogging seemed–at first glance–like a one-way street. A platform for broadcasting my own thoughts.

I guess I forgot that people will actually listen. And more than listen, interact and engage.

And I appreciate so much when they do. It’s the difference between talking to a brick wall and talking to a real person. No contest.

That leads me to today’s Flock to It!

As I mentioned in my last post, I’m a lover books and reading and anything having to do with books or reading. That’s why I was so excited when Melissa Thiessen commented on the post and turned me on to Bookswim, which is basically the Netflix of books.

Here’s what I love about Bookswim:

1. It encourages more people in more places to read. That’s always a good thing.

2. It’s a great service for bookworms on a budget, which, again, means more people reading in more places.

3. Three words: no. late. fees. Need I say more?

4. You can buy the books you like. So if you’re someone like me who loves the look and feel of books, you can almost use it as a screening system, meaning less wasted bookshelf space, fewer bookshelves, more trees, less global warming, more saving the planet. Okay, that might be a stretch. But still. It’s cool.

So there you have it. www.bookswim.com.

Flock to it, my friends.

The wonderful world of social media will take you in many directions. Trying to direct your travels is the toughest part. Do I blog? Do I use micro-blogging sites like Twitter? What about those that do more than just 140 characters like Tumblr and Pownce? At some point, the social media scene will consolidate and weed itself out. In the meantime, jump on board for the ride and enjoy the scenery.
